What is "hold"?

I am driving a mazda 6 as well... I can explain to u what does the HOLD button and its function for.

The hold button is for u to hold ur specific gear...

For other cars with Overdrive function, their gear is PRND321.. But for mazda cars.. it is PRNDSL.

L + hold = Gear 1
S + hold = Gear 2
D + hold = Gear 3
D - hold = Gear 3 & 4

This mean that when u release hold at D, the gear will shift up from 3 to 4..

I hope u understand what i mean.. to me, the hold function is for u to get more power for overtaking aka downshifting..

The gear 4 for auto not equivalent to the gear 4 for manual?

I always wondered about this .. isn't it straining for the car to travel at 100km/h on gear 4? Manual car would have shifted to gear 5 on expressway.

That time worse .. I accidentally clicked hold .. and the car is on gear 3 on the expressway all the time?! Shocked

All is getting confused. The heading is "hold".

All is talking about "overdrive on/off"

Actually, the "hold" is uses only for very slippery road especially when in cold countries where the road is cover with ice or snow. But putting the hold on, it actually maintain at tat low gear and gain better control so tat the gear would not shift when slipage occur.

U are right in that putting hold maintains a lower gear, but till which gear, that depends on which gear mode u are in as i have clarified earlier on...
I have got 2 cars at home, one with a hold and the other with overdrive... both works exactly the same..
For overdrive, normally when u are driving, overdrive is on, allowing to engage the maximum gear...
For hold, when normal driving, the hold is off to allow u to engage the maximum gear...
To downshift 1 gear when in max gear or allow the gearbox to shift up only to its 2nd max gear, u turn off overdrive (equivalent to turning on the hold button)... To look at it another way, when the word (hold or overdrive) is lighted on the dashboard, it means that u will be able to engage into yuor max gear...

As for the notation for the gears, it does not depend on whether it comes with hold or overdrive... My 323 with hold and my dad's CRV with overdrive both comes in PRNDSL... Its a matter of how the car manufacturer wanna name it...

If your car comes in 5AT of cos it'll shift up to 5th gear...
But most auto cars in SG comes in only 4AT thats why u can't shift into 5th gear...
As long as your car doesn't redlines at 100km/h on 4th gear, u can safely cruise at that speed... Thats why at 100km/h, if a manual is running at ard 2000++ rpm, an auto is likely to run at close to 3000rpm (comparing same car but manual and auto)... It does not strain the car...

i remembered when i drove the 2G honda city vtec it doesn't haf this "hold" thingy. there are only the following on the gearbox: D4(normal drive), D3 & D2. normally when i wanna kui the vtec i will downshift to D3 & floor the pedal..using the right techniques its possible to drag over 5k rpm to kui vtec.

however, somehow it gave me the impression that if u're at a cruising speed & u suddenly downshift to D3, it will strain the auto gear box..is it true? i'm not very familiar wif auto drive..maybe can enlighten me also.

too lazy to back my conjecture up with figures, but i believe that for the same model, the MT and AT versions will have differing gear ratios. so the auto's final gear of 4 will be as 'relaxed' as the manual's final 5th...

imho, these 'overdrive' and 'hold' features round up the classic notion of "manual > auto" Laughing
